Ordinary things slip away from their familiar appearance. Colour, light, reflections and surfaces draw attention away from what they are and towards how they appear — seductive, heightened, sometimes difficult to name. Recognition becomes uncertain, and the familiar begins to look strangely unfamiliar.

The baroque emerges from this instability: not as ornament or excess, but through the shifting nature of appearances. Objects attract the eye, resist identification, and seem to turn into something else. Looking becomes less a way of identifying what is there than of remaining open to what it might become.
