Things, Fading
These images emerge from a growing fascination with the mystery of things, bringing together photographs from my archive and new work. They inhabit the everyday through the night — shadows, windows, dimly lit lamps, urban views, landscapes and surfaces — where objects and places seem gradually to withdraw from their function and recognizability. A reduced range of greys and blacks suggests rather than explains what appears, opening a suspended space in which forms seem slowly to fade.
Among these images, a few departures emerge: a dirt road disappearing towards infinity, an illuminated tent, a black shape enclosing an empty space. These act as counterpoints, introducing a more unsettling, inward dimension. The photographs do not seek so much to identify a place or an object as to make a spatial condition perceptible, in which the familiar gradually becomes strange.
